Overview

My Special Start is intended for distribution (with supervision) by ICN/NICU staff to parents and family members.

This book is written to and for the parents of premature infants who must begin their lives in a hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). To begin life this way is indeed a very special start for both the baby and the family.

My Special Start will be helpful for parents who find themselves in a NICU setting, and it will be especially helpful for families whose babies must have a lengthy stay in the hospital. This book is the result of 15 years experience working with infants and their families in the NICU.

The premature birth of a baby can be a difficult time for parents and family members. No family is prepared for the crisis of a premature birth. The NICU can be a strange and scary place with its "high-tech" machines and busy staff.

This book and the guidance of the NICU staff will show parents how to begin to help their baby as they progress through the early weeks of hospitalization. Initially, parents will only be able to watch and learn about their baby; but later, they will be able to touch, soothe and hold their premature infant. The pictures in this book offer examples of the kinds of interactions that are helpful for premature babies. These interactions should always occur with the guidance of the NICU staff. Although there may be difficult moments, the closeness and time a parent spends with his/her baby can be an important part of this special start.

The premature baby is a unique new person and has the ability to sense and feel and communicate in his or her own way. Thus, this book is written from the baby's point of view - to bring the parent closer to touching, holding and understanding how he/she can facilitate their baby's development.

Benefits:
  • Offers unique insights from the infant's point of view. Helps parents understand the important issues of their premature infant's development: early holding and skin-to-skin contact; how to help with their baby's care; emotional closeness; recognizing stress and making adjustments; and beginning interactions.
  • Enables parents: Helps clarify their role in their baby's hospitalization and development.
  • Facilitates parent's involvement in their infant's caregiving needs. The 60 pictures and warm text show parents how to develop mutually satisfying contacts/understand their infant's behavior and progress: the first anxious days, first holding, setbacks, feedings, and preparation for discharge.
