About VORT

At VORT we are dedicated to helping you serve infants, toddlers, children, and their families. Our products are designed to encourage effective planning and communication, and to help you get the most from your limited time. We call our products Practical Tools because they can help you save time, they are developmental in design, and they are comprehensive yet easy to use.

The original concept for the term "VORT" was developed by Tom Holt in response to a 1970 essay contest in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on "How Can Information Science Benefit Mankind?" The initial theme seemed apparent -- help people and organizations define Objectives and use their limited Resources within Time to meet the objectives. But objectives alone do not assure "benefit." It was obvious that guiding "values" were key to providing information and developing systems that were of benefit to society and mankind. Thus the concept of VORT: Values, Objectives, Resources, and Time; with Values guiding the definition and attainment of Objectives met by the application of Resources within Time.

Company History

In 1970, after developing manufacturing and management systems for some of the original Silicon Valley companies, Tom accepted a job as coordinator for a federal project to develop systems for special education programs. The Behavioral Characteristics Progression (the BCP -- one of the earliest and most successful criterion-referenced assessments) resulted from this project. To help develop the BCP and complete other special education projects, Tom formed VORT Corporation in 1971. In 1972, based in part on its work with the BCP, VORT Corporation was asked by court-appointed experts and the state of Pennsylvania to help develop statewide systems for the landmark Right to Education program. Subsequently, VORT completed a variety of state and local projects for special education and Child Find programs in the states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, North Carolina, and California.

In 1975, VORT began publishing the BCP with emphasis on delivering "practical tools" to special educators. In 1979, VORT first published HELP - the Hawaii Early Learning Profile for ages 0-3. VORT has continued to add a variety of new titles to its list of "Practical Tools." In 1992 and 1995, VORT expanded and revised the HELP 0-3 materials and in 1995, VORT completely revised the HELP for Preschooler materials. In 1997, VORT re-published the BCP in a more practical and economic design. The HELP products are best sellers in the Early Childhood and Head Start markets.

VORT continues to update and revise its products, and the HELP family of products have become world-wide best sellers for curriculum-based assessment, ages 0-6 years.
